1099-DIV EDUCATION MODULE
 Layman Teaching Guide for Students
 “Blue is the Code”
1. What a 1099-DIV Is (Plain English)
A 1099-DIV is simply a PROFIT RECEIPT. It means you owned part of something that made a profit, and you were paid
because of that ownership. It is not payment for work, not a refund, and not the return of your own money.
2. The Golden Rule Students Must Memorize
Dividends come from PROFITS paid because of OWNERSHIP. If money is just being returned or moved, it is NOT
income and no 1099-DIV is used.

5. Contrast – When 1099-DIV Is NOT Used
If the trust or estate simply returns $10,000 of principal to a beneficiary, there is no profit and no income. That money is
a balance-sheet movement only. No 1099-DIV, no 1099-INT, and no 1099-NEC are allowed.

7. Final Student Summary
A 1099-DIV is only used when profit is paid to an owner. Returning money that already belonged to someone is not
income. Forms must always match what the money really is.
